Material Overview

Polycarbonate (PC) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic known for its exceptional impact resistance, optical clarity, and heat resistance. It is the material of choice for safety equipment, optical components, and applications requiring both transparency and durability.

PC machines well with appropriate tooling and parameters, producing clear, smooth surfaces. It offers up to 250 times the impact resistance of glass and maintains its properties across a wide temperature range (-40°C to 120°C).

Polycarbonate is available in transparent, translucent, and opaque variants, and can be tinted or colored. It is widely used for machine guards, safety visors, LED diffusers, and medical device components.

Key Advantages

  • Exceptional impact resistance (250x stronger than glass)
  • Excellent optical clarity (up to 90% light transmission)
  • High heat resistance
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Lightweight alternative to glass
  • UV-stabilized grades available

Fine Scratches on Transparent Parts: How Do We Ensure Undamaged Delivery?+
Scratches on transparent plastic parts mostly occur during handling rather than machining. We isolate processes to prevent damage: protective films are applied throughout, independent trays prevent stacking between stations, and dedicated fixtures ensure proper positioning. Final inspection is performed under standard light boxes to check each unit's appearance. We guarantee a high-gloss, scratch-free, and flawless finish, not just "imperceptible" defects.

Can Plastic Parts Achieve a Ra0.4μm Mirror Finish?+
Yes, but not all plastics can achieve this. Dense, polishable materials such as acrylic, PC, POM, and PEEK, when processed with diamond tooling and polishing, can consistently reach surface roughness below Ra0.4μm, achieving a high-gloss, mirror-like appearance. Glass or carbon fiber-filled grades, due to exposed fibers, can only achieve a matte or satin finish, which we will clarify in advance.

Which Is More Transparent: Clear PVC or Acrylic?+
Acrylic is more transparent, reaching up to 92% light transmission; when polished, it resembles optical glass and resists yellowing outdoors. Clear PVC looks similar after polishing but is less expensive and inherently flame-retardant (UL94 V-0), making it suitable for machine windows or protective shields that do not require the highest optical clarity.

Can CNC Machining of Acrylic (PMMA) Achieve a Mirror Finish?+
Yes. Acrylic is one of the few plastics that can achieve a mirror finish directly through cutting. We use single-crystal diamond tools for precision machining, followed by flame polishing or diamond grinding. Surface roughness is consistently controlled within Ra0.4μm, delivering a high-gloss appearance free of scratches or defects, resembling a mirror. No secondary coating is required. For batch production, identical parameters are used to ensure consistent mirror finish quality.

Can Plastic and Aluminum Parts Maintain Consistent Aesthetic Quality?+
The criteria for judgment are consistent: high gloss, high-shine surface, no scratches, and no defects. The difference lies in the process—aluminum parts rely on anodizing and polishing, while plastic parts use diamond cutting and flame polishing or mechanical polishing. When aluminum and plastic parts are mixed in the same batch, we standardize color swatches and gloss samples to avoid visual discrepancies between the two materials on the same product.

What Is the Difference Between PSU and PPSU?+
Both can withstand repeated 134°C steam sterilization. PSU has a long-term operating temperature of approximately 160°C and is more cost-effective. PPSU offers better impact resistance, chemical stability, and higher transparency. It can endure thousands of sterilization cycles, making it the preferred choice for surgical instrument handles, sterilization trays, and dental handpiece components. For medical parts, we provide original manufacturer material certificates and biocompatibility documentation.
